Meet Michael

Michael Whaley is the son of an immigrant.

His mother came to the United States at a young age for a better future, and went on to become a first-grade teacher.

Michael followed in her footsteps, and became an elementary school teacher himself after attending the University of Memphis College of Education.

He began his professional career as a public school teacher at Getwell Elementary before leading his own school, has decades of experience in economics, finance, and investment management, and currently serves as an elected Democratic Shelby County Commissioner. 

Elected twice as a Shelby County Commissioner, Michael Whaley has a real track record of putting our community first:

Sponsored growth in the property tax relief and tax freeze programs for seniors, veterans, and disabled Shelby County residents, ensuring financial support for those who need it the most

Fought alongside community advocates to stop air and water pollution in South Memphis and beyond
